Tragic Passing of Benjamin Merritt in Fenton Road-Rage Shooting Incident

In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded near Highway 141 and Gravois Bluffs in Fenton, a road-rage confrontation turned fatal on a Friday morning. St. Louis County Police identified the victim of this unfortunate incident as 34-year-old Benjamin Merritt of High Ridge.

Robert Mulkey, a 53-year-old resident of Crystal City, Missouri, has been arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in connection with Merritt’s tragic demise. Mulkey is currently held in custody without the possibility of a 10% bond, with bail set at $500,000 cash only.

The incident took place around 8:10 a.m. when law enforcement responded to a traffic hazard report at Highway 141 and Gravois Bluffs Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found two vehicles on the road and a man who had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite being transported to a hospital, Benjamin Merritt tragically succumbed to his injuries.

According to a probable cause statement, the victim had stopped traffic, exited his vehicle, and approached Mulkey, who remained in his car. Allegedly, an altercation ensued during which the victim flicked his cigarette at Mulkey’s face. Subsequently, Mulkey shot Merritt in the back as he was returning to his own vehicle.
