Estranged Husband Nityadevi Ramroop Dies in Murder Suicide

Tragedy Strikes as Nityadevi Ramroop Loses Her Life

A heart-wrenching incident occurred in Katy, where a mother, Nityadevi Ramroop, was fatally shot by her estranged husband just days before their divorce was set to be finalized. Nityadevi was only 35 years old and had just returned home when this terrible event unfolded, leaving her family and community in shock.

According to her attorney, Uchi Ohia, the estranged husband took her life in the driveway, mere feet away from their children who were inside their home at the time. He subsequently took his own life, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.

Ohia had been representing Nityadevi for approximately a year and had observed her growing concerns regarding her estranged husband’s behavior in the lead-up to the divorce trial. “Her increasing fear was the trial coming up that he would do something to harm her,” Ohia stated. “She was being told by his friends that he was saying some very alarming things.”

Despite Nityadevi’s efforts to protect herself and her children, Ohia claims that she felt let down by the system. Nityadevi had reportedly called the police three or four times, expressing her fears, but was allegedly told there was nothing they could do.

Ohia advised her to inform the police that she believed her estranged husband was following her, but she was informed that since he had not committed a crime, there was nothing they could do to prosecute him.

When questioned about the apparent lack of action by authorities, Ohia noted that it was somewhat shocking, but he also acknowledged the challenges. “Unfortunately, we live in a society where some take advantage of those means of getting help by inundating them with calls,” he said.

Additionally, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) got involved at one point after receiving an anonymous tip from the school where the children attended. However, DFPS chose not to pursue any further action.

An order of protection had been granted a few weeks prior to the tragic event, but Nityadevi’s attorney believes she had concerns that this might not be sufficient, as it ultimately turned out to be.

When asked what advice he would give to victims in similar situations, Ohia encouraged people not to get discouraged. He emphasized the importance of seeking help, contacting the police, reporting incidents, seeking legal counsel, and understanding that they are not alone. Nityadevi’s strength in attempting to escape her situation and seek help serves as an example of resilience.
