Øystein Aarseth, better known as Euronymous, was a pioneer in the Norwegian black-metal circuit. He co-founded the band Mayhem and was its guitarist. He also launched the metal record label Deathlike Silence Productions and the black-metal record shop Helvete. A self-proclaimed Satanist, he was murdered by his bandmate Varg Vikernes.
