Former Cedar Grove NJ Mayor Robert O’Toole Obituary

Robert O’Toole, a former mayor and council member of Cedar Grove, passed away on Wednesday, the township announced. He was 89.

O’Toole spent the majority of his time working for the government. He served on the Cedar Grove Township Council for 12 years and has been a volunteer firefighter for more than 40 years. He was the father of Kevin O’Toole, a former state senator and the chairman of the board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at the moment.

O’Toole served in the U.S. Army twice and was a Korean War veteran. Flags in Cedar Grove will fly at half-staff for the following week in honor of his contributions to the community, the township announced on Facebook.

In his final meeting before leaving the council in 2015, O’Toole remarked, “I have stated before that in life all times come to an end.”

O’Toole said in that meeting that his mother raised him after his father abandoned the family and that he began working full-time at the age of 14 to support his family. While serving in Korea, he met Young Ok, his future wife. Eileen, their daughter, works as a police captain in Cedar Grove.

The community center in Cedar Grove was given O’Toole’s name in 2017.
