Lisa Thornton Passes Away,Monmouth County Assignment Judge,

Superior Court Judge Lisa Thornton, the assignment judge in Monmouth County, has died suddenly.  She was 59.

Thornton, a hugely respected jurist for the last fifteen years, was traveling between New Jersey and Florida at the time of her death.

Gov. Jon Corzine nominated her to serve on the bench in 2008.  She became the assignment judge in 2014 following the retirement of Lawrence Lawson.

She had served as an associate counsel to Corzine and then as chief of staff to two attorneys general, Stuart Rabner, now the chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, and Anne Milgram, now the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration administrator.

A JURIST OF GREAT RESPECT The Long Branch native had worked hard and persevered to become a highly regarded jurist.

Thornton received her bachelor’s degree in 1982 from Rutgers University, Douglass College, after graduating from Long Branch High School that same year.

After graduating from Rutgers University School of Law–Newark, she practiced trial law for Prudential Financial.

In 1999, then-Mayor Michael Beson appointed Thornton to the bench of the Neptune Township Municipal Court. In 2014, she became the first Black woman in Monmouth County to be appointed as an assignment judge, making history in the process.

Thornton took over for Lawrence Lawson, who retired as Assignment Judge. In 2008, she was nominated to the bench by Governor Jon Corzine. Thornton worked as Corzine’s associate counsel and later as the chief of staff for two attorneys general, Stuart Rabner (now the chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court) and Anne Milgram (now the administrator of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration).

She was the Department of Banking and Insurance’s special deputy commissioner during Governor James E. McGreevey’s term.

Thornton was a well regarded judge and a cherished part of the community who was loved dearly by his friends, family, and congregation.
