Mario Lanza (born Alfred Arnold Cocozza; January 31, 1921 – October 7, 1959) was an American tenor, actor, and film star of the late 1940s and early 1950s who rose to fame in the late 1940s and early 1950s in Hollywood.
Lanza started training to be a professional singer when she was sixteen years old. The next year, after a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Lanza signed a seven-year deal with MGM’s chairman and CEO Louis B. Mayer, who had attended the performance and been pleased by his singing ability. Prior to this, the mature Lanza had only performed in two opera productions throughout his life. In the next year (1948), however, he would perform in New Orleans in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, in which he would portray Pinkerton.
That Midnight Kiss (1949), in which he co-starred with Kathryn Grayson and Ethel Barrymore, marked his feature film debut. During the next year’s production of The Toast of New Orleans, he sang the famous song “Be My Love,” which went on to become his first million-selling single. A year later, he starred as Enrico Caruso (1873–1921), his tenor hero, in The Great Caruso, a biopic that yielded another million-selling single, “The Loveliest Night of the Year,” in 1951. (a song which used the melody of Sobre las Olas). The Great Caruso was the highest-grossing picture of the year in terms of box office revenue. It was the title song of his following film, Because You’re Mine, that became his last number one hit single to sell one million copies. The song went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for its success.
