Mikhail Gorbachev Wife : Who Was Raisa Gorbacheva?

According to Russian state media and other outlets, Mikhail Gorbachev, who was instrumental in ending the Cold War with the West and ushering in an era of reform in the Soviet Union, passed away on Tuesday.

He was 91.

In the minds of many Russians, he will always be remembered as the man who brought the Soviet Union to its end. However, the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall both came down during his presidency. In 1985, when he came to power, he was noticeably different from his predecessors. He was young, energetic, and cheerful.

Mikhail Gorbachev Cause Of Death

RT reported that Gorbachev died from a “long and grave illness.”

Mikhail Gorbachev Wife

Russian activist and wife of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Raisa Maksimovna was born on  5 January 1932 and died on 20 September 1999.

She helped raise money for programs that treat children with blood cancer, supported emerging artists in Russia, and preserved historic sites.

She was born in the Altai region of Siberia, in the city of Rubtsovsk.

She was born to Maxim Andreyevich Titarenko, a railway engineer from Chernihiv, Ukraine, and his wife, Alexandra Petrovna Porada, from Veseloyarsk, Siberia.

She grew up in the Ural Mountains and met her future husband at a Moscow philosophy school. She received her doctorate from Moscow State Pedagogical University and spent some time as a professor at Moscow State University.

During his visit to the Federal Republic of Germany in June 1989, Raisa Gorbacheva accompanied the Metropolitan of Volokolamsk.
She graduated in September 1953, married Mikhail Gorbachev, and settled in the southern Russian region of Stavropol.

There she lectured on Marxism and Leninism and defended her thesis on kolkhoz life in the field of sociology.

Irina Mikhailovna (Irina Virganskaya) was born to her and her husband in 1957.

After her husband’s return to Moscow, where he was quickly rising in the ranks of the Soviet Communist Party, Gorbacheva accepted a lectureship at her alma mater, Moscow State University.

When her husband was named Soviet Union General Secretary in 1985, she resigned.

Her first lady role was novel at home, and her appearances alongside her husband did much to humanize the country’s image abroad. She had a relatively rare public profile for the wife of a communist party leader.

On June 1st, 1990, Gorbacheva accompanied Barbara Bush, then the First Lady of the United States, to Wellesley College in Massachusetts. During the commencement ceremony, both women addressed the graduates and touched on the place of women in today’s society.

Live coverage of the addresses was broadcast on every major American television network, and CNN provided cable-TV coverage to the rest of the world. Gorbacheva, who suffered a minor stroke on the final day of the Soviet Coup of 1991 that attempted to depose her husband from power, was permanently scarred by the events of that day.
In the wake of the subsequent political upheaval, the Gorbachevs were forced to retreat into relative obscurity.
