Missing Maxwell Roberts, Utah man found dead in Martin County

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 20-year-old Utah man passed away following a freediving and spearfishing expedition in the sea off Martin County on Friday.

According to Martin County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy John Budensiek, Maxwell Roberts and four other people were in a boat about two and a half miles outside the St. Lucie Inlet when the event took place.

He said that immediately before 11 a.m., the missing diver, named as Roberts, was reported to the sheriff’s marine section, and that a “massive search” was started.

The four people, according to Budensiek, claimed that their friend “had free dove into the water with a spear gun, fins, and a mask and had not resurfaced in a timely manner.”

In an effort to locate their comrade, “they had all individually dove into the water,” according to Budensiek. That is what prompted the call to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, then.

The center console boat the five guys had been out on was anchored at Sandsprit Park on Friday afternoon, and there was still a sizable group of sheriff’s and Martin County Fire Rescue personnel and cars there.
