Kenneth Walker III was born on October 20, 2000, in Arlington, Tennessee. He attended Arlington High School where he began his football career playing for their football team. There, he rushed for 3,485 yards with 41 touchdowns.

After his high school career, he committed to Wake Forest University to play college football. He played collegiate football at the university for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

After his 2020 season, he transferred to Michigan State University to continue his collegiate career and became the starter his first year. He was awarded the Doak Walker and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award for the 2021 NCAA season.

He then announced that he would forgo his senior year and declared his eligibility for the 2022 NFL Draft.
