Why is Ron Rivera called Riverboat Ron?

A head coach of American football with the National Football League’s Washington Commanders (NFL).

He was an All-American linebacker for the Golden Bears while he was a student at the University of California, Berkeley in the early 1980s.

He spent nine seasons with the Chicago Bears after graduating, including being a part of the 1985 squad that won the Super Bowl XX. He was selected by them in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft.

Why is Ron Rivera called Riverboat Ron?

After making many dangerous choices early in the 2013 season, which had not previously been attributed to him, Rivera earned the moniker “Riverboat Ron” from both fans and the media.

The term was first used by gamblers on the American frontier in the nineteenth century, and Rivera later adopted it for use on his social media platforms.

When Rivera played for the Chicago Bears, the club frequently referred to Rivera as “Chico,” as was the custom under head coach Mike Ditka.

Buddy Ryan, the defensive coordinator, gave Rivera the moniker because he resembled Freddie Prinze from the Chico and the Man television series.
